Common questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the price without VAT by the VAT rate, then add that amount on. For a £100 price at 20%, the VAT is £20, so the price with VAT is £120. The calculator does this sum for you.
How do I take VAT off a price?
Divide the price that includes VAT by 1.2 for 20% VAT, or by 1.05 for 5%. Don’t take 20% off the total: 20% of £120 is £24, which would leave £96. But the VAT is 20% of the price without VAT, so £120 ÷ 1.2 gives £100 with £20 of VAT.
Which VAT rate applies?
Most goods and services are at the standard rate of 20%. Some are at the reduced rate of 5%, and some are zero-rated at 0%. Check GOV.UK for the rate that applies to your goods or services, as there are exceptions.
Do I need to charge VAT?
Only if your business is registered for VAT. Check GOV.UK for the current registration threshold and the rules for your business, as they can change.
