See what you really make on a job

Enter what a job costs you and what you charge, and see your profit, margin and markup in seconds. Or work out the price to charge for the margin you want.

  1. What do you already know?

Margin is profit as a share of the price. Markup is profit as a share of your cost.

  2. Materials, subcontractors and anything else you paid out. Whether to count your own time is up to you.

  3. Your price, without VAT.

Common questions

What’s the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the price you charge. Markup is profit as a share of what the job cost you. For example, a job that costs £60 and sells for £100 has a £40 profit: that’s a 40% margin and a 66.7% markup. The two numbers are different, so check which one you’re looking at.

What’s a good margin?

It depends on your trade, your overheads and how much work you can get, so there’s no single right figure. Work out what the job really costs, including your running costs, then check the price covers them and leaves a profit you’re happy with.

Should the cost include my time?

That’s up to you, but it helps to include it. If you leave your time out, a job can look profitable while you’re working for less than you think. Some people work out an hourly rate and add it to the cost of each job.

How can I raise my margin?

You can charge more for the work, cut what you spend on materials or subcontractors, or spend less time on each job. Quoting clearly and before you start also helps, because you can set a price that covers your costs.

Do you see the numbers I type in?

No. The calculator runs in your browser, and the numbers you type aren’t sent to us.
