See how your page looks on Google

Type your page title and description to see how they could look in Google search, and whether they’re the right length.

We’ve filled in an example. Replace it with your own.

The blue headline in Google. Main service, town, then your business name.

39 characters. Good length. Your title should show in full.

The grey text under the headline. What you do, where, and a reason to click.

150 characters. Good length. Your description should show in full.

A close guide, not an exact copy. Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions, and the exact cut-off depends on the screen.

Where do I change these?

In WordPress, Wix and Squarespace they’re usually under the page’s SEO settings. If someone else built your site, send them what you wrote here.

Common questions

What are a page title and a description?

The title is the blue headline people click in Google. The description is the short grey text underneath. Together they’re your advert on Google, so they’re worth getting right.

How long should they be?

Aim for a title of about 50 to 60 characters and a description of about 120 to 155 characters. Longer ones usually get cut off. The tool measures the actual width, as Google does.

What should I put in the title?

Your main service and your town first, then your business name. For example: “Roof Repairs in Burnley | Smith Roofing”.

Why does Google show something different?

Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions if it thinks something else on your page matches the search better. A clear, accurate title and description make that less likely.

Does every page need its own?

Yes. Each page should have its own title and description that match what’s on that page. Our free website check tells you if yours are missing.
